Márta Mészáros

Women Directors

Born in Budapest in 1931 and dying in 2025, Márta Mészáros grew up in the Soviet Union, where her father, a sculptor, was killed in Stalin's purges, and returned to Hungary after the war. She studied at VGIK in Moscow and became one of the first women to direct features in Hungary. Her films explore women's independence and the effects of politics on private life. Adoption (1975) won the Golden Bear in Berlin, and Diary for My Children (1984), the first of an autobiographical trilogy, won the Grand Prix at Cannes.
