Born in Flint, Michigan, in 1954, Michael Moore began as a left-wing journalist and became the best-known maker of polemical documentaries. Roger & Me (1989) tracked the effects of General Motors' plant closures on his home town. Bowling for Columbine (2002) won the Oscar for documentary, and Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), a critique of George W. Bush and the Iraq war, won the Palme d'Or and became the highest-grossing documentary ever. He also made Sicko (2007) on American health care. His methods, humour and editing choices are controversial.
