Born in Shiraz in 1972, Mohammad Rasoulof studied sociology and edited before directing. His films criticise the Iranian authorities and made him a target: he was arrested in 2010 with Jafar Panahi, and sentenced in 2020 and again later to prison and lashes. Manuscripts Don't Burn (2013) and A Man of Integrity (2017), which won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes, were made under pressure. There Is No Evil (2020), four stories about the death penalty, won the Golden Bear in Berlin, and The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024) was made in secret. He left Iran in 2024.
