Neil Jordan

British Cinema

Born in Sligo in 1950, Neil Jordan is both a novelist and a film-maker, and his work is full of the Irish gothic, fairy tales and gender fluidity. After Angel (1982), he made The Company of Wolves (1984), a feminist version of Little Red Riding Hood. The Crying Game (1992), the story of an IRA man and a British soldier's lover, was a surprise hit and won him the Oscar for original screenplay. He later directed Interview with the Vampire (1994), Michael Collins (1996), which won the Golden Lion, and The Butcher Boy (1997).
