Born in New York in 1946, Oliver Stone dropped out of Yale to teach in Vietnam, then enlisted and fought with the US infantry, an experience that informed his work. He won an Oscar for the screenplay of Midnight Express, and then established himself as a director with Salvador and Platoon (1986), which won the Oscars for best picture and best director. He made Wall Street (1987), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), for which he won a second directing Oscar, JFK (1991) and Natural Born Killers (1994). His films about American history and politics are provocative and often disputed.
