Paul Greengrass

British Cinema

Born in Cheam, Surrey, in 1955, Paul Greengrass was a television investigative journalist for World in Action before he turned to drama-documentary. His hand-held, immediate style is built on research and use of real participants. Bloody Sunday (2002), on the shooting of civil rights marchers in Derry in 1972, won the Golden Bear. He directed two Bourne films with Matt Damon, which changed the look of action cinema, and United 93 (2006), a real-time account of the hijacked plane of September 11, 2001, which earned him the BAFTA for best director. He has also directed Captain Phillips (2013).
