Born in Genoa in 1914 and died in Rome in 1974, Germi studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. He began in the neorealist tradition with social dramas about ordinary and often Sicilian people, and later became a leading figure of the satirical commedia all'italiana. Divorce Italian Style won him the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and a nomination for Best Director, and The Birds, the Bees and the Italians won the Palme d'Or.
