Born in Breslau in 1873 and died in Paris in 1938, Wiene directed The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the film that came to define German Expressionist cinema with its painted, distorted sets. He worked on both sides of the border for the rest of his career and died in exile after the Nazis took power.
