Born in London in 1945, Roland Joffé directed in the theatre and television, including Coronation Street, before his feature debut The Killing Fields (1984), about the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia seen through a New York Times journalist and his Cambodian assistant. It was nominated for seven Oscars. The Mission (1986), with Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons as eighteenth-century Jesuits in South America, won the Palme d'Or. His later work, including The Scarlet Letter (1995) and City of Joy (1992), was less well received.
