Born in Paris in 1933 and raised in Poland, Polanski survived the Holocaust as a child. He made Knife in the Water in Poland and then thrillers and horror films in Britain and the United States. In 1977 he pleaded guilty in the US to unlawful sex with a minor and left the country in 1978 before sentencing, which remains an unresolved subject of controversy.
