Born in Styrsö, near Gothenburg, in 1974, Ruben Östlund began by making ski films and moved to fiction with a series of films structured as cool, observational studies of social embarrassment: Involuntary (2008), Play (2011) and Force Majeure (2014), in which a father's instinctive reaction during an avalanche threatens his marriage. His satires on art and money, The Square (2017) and Triangle of Sadness (2022), each won the Palme d'Or, making him one of the few directors to win it twice. His cinema is a comedy of manners about class, masculinity and group behaviour.
