Sohrab Shahid-Saless

Iranian New Wave

Born in Tehran in 1944 and died in Chicago in 1998, Sohrab Shahid-Saless studied film in Vienna and in Paris and made his first features in Iran in the early 1970s, with a minimalist and observational style of long takes, which has been compared with the work of Robert Bresson and Yasujiro Ozu. A Simple Event (1973) and Still Life (1974), which won the Silver Bear at Berlin, show the repeated routines of poor people. He left Iran in 1975, worked in Germany, where he made films on the lives of immigrants and exiles, and later settled in the United States.
