Born in Skopje in 1974, Teona Strugar Mitevska studied in New York and works as a director in North Macedonia, in a body of work centred on women's lives in the Balkans. I Am from Titov Veles (2007), about three sisters in a small industrial town, was her first feature. God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya (2019), in which an unemployed young woman jumps into a river to catch a cross in a men-only religious ritual, was in competition at Berlin and won the Guild of German Art House Cinemas and Ecumenical prizes. It was her breakthrough.
