The Taviani Brothers

Italian Neorealism and After

Paolo (born 1931) and Vittorio (born 1929) Taviani, from San Miniato in Tuscany, worked as a directing pair for more than fifty years, sharing every credit. Vittorio died in 2018 and Paolo in 2024. They began in the 1960s as political filmmakers, and found fame with Padre Padrone (1977), the story of a Sardinian shepherd boy kept from school by his father, which won the Palme d'Or. Their later work moved between peasant memory, history and literature, with The Night of the Shooting Stars, Kaos and Caesar Must Die, which won the Golden Bear in 2012.
