Born in La Cañada, California, in 1889 and died in 1949, Victor Fleming started as a mechanic and chauffeur, then worked as a cameraman for Douglas Fairbanks. He became a dependable studio director at MGM, a man's man who liked hunting and flying. In 1939 he directed The Wizard of Oz, after taking over from others, and Gone with the Wind, replacing George Cukor, and won the Oscar for directing the latter. Few directors can claim two such enduring films in one year.
