Born in 1893 and died in 1953, Pudovkin was a student of Lev Kuleshov and one of the great figures of Soviet montage. He believed that a film is built shot by shot, like bricks, and favoured emotional, human stories over Eisenstein's collision of images. He also wrote influential books on film technique.
