Plot
In Mongolia in the early 1920s, a young trapper is cheated by a fur trader and joins the resistance to the British occupiers. After being wounded he is saved by a rumour that he is a descendant of Genghis Khan, and the occupiers set him up as a puppet ruler. Realising how he is being used, he turns on them and leads a great Mongol uprising. Vsevolod Pudovkin's 1928 film mixes location shooting, Buddhist ceremonies and sharp editing to make a Soviet case against colonialism.
Sinekatalog’s take
Vsevolod Pudovkin's silent film follows a Mongolian trapper cheated by a fur trader who becomes a rumoured descendant of Genghis Khan and a rebel against British occupiers. Rousing and visual, it is a landmark of Soviet montage.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
