Yorgos Lanthimos

Balkan Cinema

Born in Athens in 1973, Yorgos Lanthimos directed commercials, theatre and music videos before his breakthrough Dogtooth (2009), about parents who keep their adult children in a controlled isolation. It became a leading work of the Greek 'weird wave'. He then made English-language films in a deadpan, absurd style: The Lobster (2015), The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), The Favourite (2018), a costume comedy of court intrigue in Queen Anne's England, and Poor Things (2023), which won the Golden Lion at Venice. Emma Stone has won Oscars in his films.
