Plot

In 1560, a Spanish expedition searching for the legendary city of El Dorado descends the Amazon on rafts. The ruthless and megalomaniac Lope de Aguirre takes command in a mutiny and leads the dwindling band deeper into the jungle, as hunger, disease and attacks from unseen natives reduce them. Werner Herzog's 1972 film, with an intense Klaus Kinski, was shot on location in Peru in gruelling conditions and is a hallucinatory study of madness and power.

Sinekatalog’s take

Herzog follows a Spanish conquistador's doomed Amazon expedition into madness. Klaus Kinski's feverish Aguirre and the real jungle make the film hypnotic, with a final image of mad grandeur.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
