Plot

Narayan Kamble, an ageing folk singer and activist, is arrested in Mumbai and charged with inciting a sewer worker's suicide through his song. The film follows the trial in a lower court, where procedure, language and prejudice make a farce of justice, and shows the private lives of the lawyers and the judge. Chaitanya Tamhane's 2014 Marathi film won the Golden Lion for best debut at Venice.

Sinekatalog’s take

Chaitanya Tamhane's courtroom drama follows a folk singer tried absurdly for abetting a sewer worker's suicide. Dry, patient and sharp, with real-seeming procedure, it is a quietly damning look at India's justice system.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
