Plot
In 1941, a German U-boat leaves port at La Rochelle for a patrol in the Atlantic, with a young war correspondent on board. The film shows the boredom, the claustrophobia, the fear of depth-charge attacks and the exhaustion of the crew, under a worn-out, humane Captain. Based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel, with Jürgen Prochnow.
Sinekatalog’s take
One of the greatest war films, shot almost entirely inside a real-feeling submarine set with a hand-held camera that follows the crew down the narrow corridors. It is humane and anti-war without having to say so.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
