Wolfgang Petersen (1941-2022) was born in Emden, Germany, and directed episodes of the TV crime series Tatort before Das Boot (1981), a claustrophobic submarine drama based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel that received six Academy Award nominations. It was the biggest German success abroad of its time, and Petersen followed it with The NeverEnding Story (1984) and then moved to Hollywood, where he directed In the Line of Fire, Air Force One and Troy. Das Boot remains his masterpiece.
