Plot

A young woman called Gabbeh, who is the subject of a story woven into a carpet, is brought to life by an old couple who are washing it in a stream. She tells how she fell in love with a horseman, and how her nomad family stopped her from marrying him. Mohsen Makhmalbaf's 1996 film is a colourful, poetic tale of nomad life in southern Iran.

Sinekatalog’s take

Mohsen Makhmalbaf's colourful fable has a woven carpet's pattern come to life as a nomad woman's love story. Poetic, painterly and sweet, it is a visual feast that blends folktale, music and tribal life.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
