Plot
Gelsomina, a simple-minded young woman, is sold by her mother to Zampanò, a brutal travelling strongman, and joins his act on the road in postwar Italy. Zampanò treats her harshly, but she grows attached to him. They meet a gentle tightrope walker, the Fool, who sees Gelsomina's worth and mocks the strongman. Federico Fellini's 1954 film, with Giulietta Masina as Gelsomina and Anthony Quinn as Zampanò, moves between neorealism and poetic fable, and won the first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Sinekatalog’s take
Fellini's neorealist fable follows a brutish strongman and the simple-hearted Gelsomina. Giulietta Masina is unforgettable, Nino Rota's theme lingers, and the ending is devastating.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
