Plot

In a towering future city, the rich live in luxury above ground while workers toil in vast machine halls below. Freder, the son of the city's master, falls for Maria, a young woman who preaches patience to the workers, and follows her into the depths. The ruler has Maria's likeness copied by an inventor into a robot meant to incite the workers to disaster. Fritz Lang's 1927 film mixes Art Deco design with a moral fable that heart must mediate between hand and head, and its images have shaped science fiction ever since.

Sinekatalog’s take

Fritz Lang's silent sci-fi epic of a divided city of workers and rulers. The story is melodramatic, but the sets, the robot Maria and the sheer scale shaped the look of science fiction for a century.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
