Plot
In a poor Bengali village in the early twentieth century, Apu grows up with his sister Durga, his mother Sarbajaya and his father Harihar, a priest who is often away. Through small moments such as eating sweets, running after a train and watching the monsoon, the film shows the family's struggle against hunger and illness. Satyajit Ray's 1955 debut, made on a tiny budget with non-professional actors, launched the Apu trilogy and brought Indian cinema to the attention of the world.
