Plot

In sixteenth-century Japan, a village of farmers, terrorised by bandits, hires masterless samurai to defend it, offering only food. The leader, Kambei, assembles six others, including the young Katsushiro and the wild, boastful Kikuchiyo, who is played by Toshiro Mifune. They teach the villagers to fight and prepare for a final battle in the rain. Akira Kurosawa's 1954 film, over three hours long, was an influence on countless action films and was remade as the Western The Magnificent Seven.

Sinekatalog’s take

Kurosawa's epic about hired swordsmen defending a village is long and endlessly rewarding. Its team-building structure, rain-soaked battle and humane characters shaped action cinema for decades.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
