Born in Tokyo in 1910 and died in 1998, Kurosawa was the filmmaker who introduced Japanese cinema to the world after Rashomon won the top prize at Venice in 1951. He moved between samurai epics, contemporary drama and Shakespeare adaptations, with dynamic camerawork and a deep humanism.
