An adaptation of Gorky's play about the lodgers of a doss-house.

Sinekatalog’s take

Akira Kurosawa's Gorky adaptation confines a ragged group of dwellers in an Edo-era doss-house. Stagey, claustrophobic and darkly comic, with Toshiro Mifune and Isuzu Yamada, it is a bleak, ensemble study of despair and illusion.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
