Plot

An elderly couple, Shukichi and Tomi, travel from their small town to Tokyo to visit their grown children. The children are busy with their own lives and find the visit an inconvenience, and only their widowed daughter-in-law, Noriko, treats them with real kindness. The parents return home, and soon after one of them dies. Yasujiro Ozu's 1953 film uses a low, still camera, slow pacing and everyday conversation to portray the gap between generations and the passing of time, and it is regularly voted one of the greatest films ever made.

Sinekatalog’s take

An elderly couple visits their busy grown children in Tokyo and finds little time for them. Ozu's low camera and gentle rhythm make a deeply moving study of family, ageing and quiet disappointment.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
