Plot

An ageing warlord divides his kingdom among his three sons, with disastrous results, in a Japanese retelling of King Lear.

Sinekatalog’s take

Kurosawa transposes King Lear to feudal Japan. Vivid colour, huge battle scenes and a deep sense of tragedy make it a late-career masterpiece, and the silent battle sequence is astonishing.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
