Plot

The struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis, fleeing debt collectors, hides in the decaying mansion of Norma Desmond, a forgotten star of silent films, who is planning her return to the screen. She hires him to rework her script and he becomes her kept man, trapped in her illusion. His growing affection for a young studio reader and Norma's possessiveness lead to tragedy. Billy Wilder's 1950 film, narrated by a dead man, is a dark satire on Hollywood, and Gloria Swanson's performance is unforgettable.

Sinekatalog’s take

Billy Wilder's noir is narrated by a dead man and haunted by a faded silent star. Gloria Swanson's Norma Desmond is grand, pitiable and terrifying. A savage, witty portrait of Hollywood.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
