Plot

A series of tableaux evokes the life of the eighteenth-century Armenian poet and ashik Sayat-Nova, from childhood through the monastery to his death. There is hardly any dialogue and no conventional story, but a sequence of images that use costumes, objects and gestures, drawn from Armenian art and poetry. Sergei Parajanov's 1969 film was censored by the Soviet authorities, and is now seen as one of the most original films in the history of cinema.

Sinekatalog’s take

Sergei Parajanov's tableau-filled portrait of poet Sayat-Nova is a dazzling, nearly wordless work of art. Every frame is a painting, making the film an ecstatic, mysterious visual poem.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
