Plot

Frankie Machine returns to Chicago after a spell in a drug-treatment programme, hoping to make a career as a jazz drummer. His crippled wife, his old gambling boss and his own drug dealer all pull him back to the card table and the needle. Frank Sinatra plays Frankie. Based on Nelson Algren's novel.

Sinekatalog’s take

One of the first Hollywood films to deal frankly with heroin addiction, and a Production Code test case. Sinatra is raw and convincing, and Elmer Bernstein's jazz score and Saul Bass's title design are famous.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
