Plot
During the last days of the Second World War in Germany, Maria marries Hermann in a ceremony interrupted by bombs, and he is sent to the front and then to prison. Determined to survive and to be ready for his return, she builds a successful career in the postwar economy, making ever more compromises. Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1979 film, with Hanna Schygulla, is a bitter allegory of West Germany's economic miracle.
Sinekatalog’s take
Rainer Werner Fassbinder's postwar German drama follows a woman rising through the economic miracle. Hanna Schygulla is magnificent, and the film is a sharp, ironic allegory of ambition and national amnesia.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
