Plot

In 1941, in a small Jewish village in Eastern Europe, the village fool, Shlomo, brings news that the Nazis are coming to deport the Jews. The villagers decide to stage their own deportation train, with some of the villagers acting as German guards, in order to escape to Palestine. Radu Mihăileanu's 1998 film is a bittersweet tragicomedy about hope and survival.

Sinekatalog’s take

Radu Mihăileanu's comedy has a Jewish village staging its own deportation train to escape the Nazis. Absurd, warm and sad, it balances farce and tragedy with a daring, bittersweet final twist.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
