Lavant has played the lead role in all but two of Carax's films, including Les amants du Pont-Neuf (1991) and Holy Motors (2012). Lavant is also known for his roles in Claire Denis' Beau Travail (1999) and Harmony Korine's Mister Lonely (2007).
