Born in Stockholm in 1903 and dying in 1980, Alf Sjöberg was the leading director at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, who also made films. Torment (Hets, 1944), written by the young Ingmar Bergman, is about a sadistic Latin teacher and a student's love, and won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1946. Miss Julie (1951), after Strindberg, shared the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1951. His visual style, with deep shadows and a restless camera, anticipated Bergman's early work. He also made Barabbas (1953).
