Andrzej Żuławski

Polish Cinema

Born in Lwów in 1940 and died in Warsaw in 2016, Andrzej Żuławski was an assistant to Andrzej Wajda who made violent, hysterical, operatic films of passion and political despair. The Third Part of the Night (1971), set during the Nazi occupation of Poland, was followed by The Devil, which was banned in Poland. He moved to France and made Possession (1981), a horror-drama on the collapse of a marriage in divided Berlin that won Isabelle Adjani the best actress award at Cannes. His epic science-fiction film On the Silver Globe was abandoned by Polish authorities and completed years later.
