Born in Malmö in 1930 and died in Stockholm in 1997, Bo Widerberg was a novelist and critic who attacked the Swedish film establishment, and Ingmar Bergman's introspection in particular, in his book Visionen i svensk film (1962). He called for realist cinema committed to social reality, and his films combine social commitment with the visual freshness of the French New Wave. Raven's End (1963), set in the Malmö slums of his childhood, was nominated for an Oscar. Elvira Madigan (1967), a romantic tragedy photographed in soft light, was his greatest success, and Ådalen 31 (1969) won the Jury Prize at Cannes.
