Cristian Mungiu

Balkan Cinema

Born in Iași in 1968, Cristian Mungiu was a journalist and teacher before directing. He is the best-known figure of the Romanian New Wave, a group of film-makers who, since the mid-2000s, have used long takes, naturalistic acting and dark humour to portray the legacy of the Ceaușescu years. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), about two students arranging an illegal abortion in 1987, won the Palme d'Or. He has also made Beyond the Hills (2012), Graduation (2016), which won him the best director prize at Cannes, and R.M.N. (2022).
