Born in Nazareth in 1960, Elia Suleiman lived in New York in the 1980s before returning to the Middle East. His films are deadpan, nearly wordless comic observations of daily life under occupation, often with himself as a silent, watching figure. Chronicle of a Disappearance (1996) won the prize for best first film at Venice, and Divine Intervention (2002) won the Jury Prize at Cannes.
