George Stevens (1904-1975) was born in Oakland, California, and learned the craft as a cameraman on Laurel and Hardy shorts. In the 1930s and early 1940s he directed polished comedies and adventures, among them Swing Time (1936), Gunga Din (1939) and The More the Merrier (1943). After filming the D-Day landings and the liberation of Dachau with the US Army, his work turned graver and slower: A Place in the Sun (1951), Shane (1953), Giant (1956) and The Diary of Anne Frank (1959). He won Best Director Oscars for A Place in the Sun and Giant.
