Hong Sang-soo

Contemporary Asian Cinema

Born in Seoul in 1960, Hong Sang-soo studied film in the United States and made his debut with The Day a Pig Fell into the Well (1996). He makes low-budget films, often shot in a few days with a small crew, built on conversations over soju, with repeated structures, zoom shots and variations on the same situation, in which male filmmakers and professors make fools of themselves with women. He has been compared to Éric Rohmer. Right Now, Wrong Then (2015) won the Golden Leopard at Locarno. Kim Min-hee, his partner and muse, won the best actress prize at Berlin for On the Beach at Night Alone, and he won the Silver Bear for The Woman Who Ran.
