South Korea

South Korean cinema had a golden age in the 1950s and 60s, then was hit by censorship under military rule. After democratisation in the late 1980s and a smart state support policy, it exploded: the Korean New Wave of Park Chan-wook, Bong Joon-ho and Lee Chang-dong mixes genre with social criticism. Bong's Parasite won the Palme d'Or and the Best Picture Oscar, confirming the country's film industry as a global power.
