Born in Limhamn, near Malmö, in 1931, Jan Troell was a primary-school teacher before becoming a film-maker. He often serves as his own cinematographer and editor, and is known for a patient, lyrical realism. Here's Your Life (1966), after the novel by Eyvind Johnson, introduced his naturalistic style. His epic The Emigrants (1971) and The New Land (1972), with Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, follow a Swedish farming family who move to Minnesota in the nineteenth century and were nominated for Oscars. Later films include Hamsun (1996), about the Nobel-winning author who supported the Nazis, and Everlasting Moments (2008).
