In the 1840s, a family of impoverished farmers from Småland in Sweden, led by Karl Oskar and his wife Kristina, decide to leave for America. The film follows their hardships at home, the crossing in a crowded ship, and their arrival in Minnesota. Jan Troell's 1971 film, with Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, based on the novels of Vilhelm Moberg, is a calm, epic portrait of migration, and was nominated for several Academy Awards.
Sinekatalog’s take
Jan Troell's epic follows Swedish farmers crossing the Atlantic in the 1840s. Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann are superb, and the film's patience and physical detail make it a moving saga of hardship and hope.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
