Born in Ostrava in 1926 and died in 2002, Karel Reisz was sent to Britain on the Kindertransport in 1938, and lost most of his family in the Holocaust. A critic and cofounder of Free Cinema, he directed the first great film of the British New Wave, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960), with Albert Finney as a rebellious factory worker. He also made Morgan! and Isadora, and the Hollywood-financed The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), as well as a book, The Technique of Film Editing.
