Born in Copenhagen in 1956, von Trier is a provocative filmmaker who co-founded the Dogme 95 movement. His work often puts suffering women at its centre, and he has been the subject of repeated controversy, including remarks at Cannes in 2011 that led the festival to declare him persona non grata.
