Born in Bangalore in 1923 and died in 1994, Lindsay Anderson was a critic and a leader of the Free Cinema movement of the 1950s, who argued for personal, committed filmmaking. His feature This Sporting Life (1963) was a landmark of British New Wave realism. With if.... (1968), a fantasy of revolt in a public school, and O Lucky Man! (1973) he created a satirical trilogy about Britain with Malcolm McDowell as Mick Travis. He also directed for the theatre and wrote on John Ford, and made The Whales of August (1987) with Lillian Gish and Bette Davis.
